Playing Phantom Abyss on the Steam Deck is an extremely enjoyable experience and can run very well with little issue, but there are a couple of things I noticed.

I first bought Phantom Abyss when it launched in early access, and I was hooked by the premise. You quickly run through procedurally generated temples, jump and dodge traps, use a whip to propel yourself to platforms, collect currency, and upgrade as you try to make it to the end before dying completely or a big scary idol catches up to you.

Unlock new whips to choose from before venturing into your next temple. Each whip carries a powerful blessing but also a curse that may complicate your attempt at riches and glory.

As you play though each level, you’ll be faced with challenging enemies and collect powerful loot. The more you play, the more powerful you will become!

Any players who have attempted to clear a temple before you will appear as a phantom in your run. You can use this to get an idea of where they went, what they did.

Phantom Abyss is an awesome roguelike platformer that has an addicting gameplay loop. The procedurally generated temples and different modes keep the platforming fresh, while the controls and whip make the jumping, sliding, dashing, and whipping much more fun.

Completing each run in the game’s Adventure mode unlocks a new kind of whip for you to use. Each new whip grants a single buff when equipped — one grants an extremely useful double jump, and another lets you drop coins you’ve collected in water to restore your health. There are loads of them, and once unlocked, can be used to augment any future runs you undertake. You can also spend coins collected in-level on temporary upgrades that will disappear after the run.

However, not every run will end with the same success, so be prepared to fail until you learn the mechanics.

Elie’s first step into gaming was through Pokémon but they've taken the natural next step in the horror genre. Any and every game that would keep you up at night is on their list to play - despite the fact that one of Elie’s biggest fears is being chased.

Soul Armor's best use is as a panic button; if you find yourself overwhelmed with Guardians or traps, or are falling into a bottomless pit, activate your armor and get yourself to safety ASAP, because your invulnerability will not last very long. Your Phantom Abyss charges are limited, so don't just waste it on barreling through simple traps.

As it currently stands, there are already many thrills to be had in hunting for treasure while the temple’s perils hunt you, which makes for an exciting prospect for Phantom Abyss
